Dumbarton’s first match of 2026 ended in defeat against table-topping Spartans.

Goals in either half from Bradley Whyte and Marc McNulty did the damage in bitterly cold conditions in the capital, with a game of few chances doing little to make fans forget about the sub zero temperatures.

Boss Frank McKeown welcomed back goalkeeper Brett Long in one of three changes to the side which had lost to Stirling Albion a week previous, as the Northern Irishman returned almost a year to the day since he suffered a serious Achilles injury.

After Tony Wallace had floated a header harmlessly wide of target, the first major chance of note came for the Sons with just seven minutes on the clock.

Top scorer Leighton McIntosh sprang Spartans’ offside trap and raced clear, but was denied one-on-one by home keeper Paddy Martin – with the rebound spinning away from Scott Honeyman before he could get a shot away.

It took 20 minutes for the home side to show their threat, but when they did, talisman Mark Stowe stabbed wide from the edge of the area – as Sons struggled to fully clear a ball into the box.

Marc McNulty was next to threaten, but the former Scotland international was denied by the well placed Kristian Webster on the line.

That would be as close as either side would come in the opening exchanges, with the game a scrappy watch and neither keeper being forced into serious action.

After enjoying their best spell of possession in the match however, Sons fell behind seven minutes before half-time.

Having lost possession from their own throw in on the edge of the penalty box, a quick Spartans counter attack saw the ball fall for Bradley Whyte on the edge of the area – and he smashed beyond returning keeper Long.

Sons almost found a quickfire leveller as good play sent Scott Honeyman racing clear, but he couldn’t find any takers in black and gold for his cutback.

Honeyman was at the heart of things again early in the second-half, as he carved out another chance – with another perfectly timed run.

The former Falkirk man found space behind the Spartans defence and cut the ball back for Leighton McIntosh, but he was again denied by a brave save from keeper Martin from inside the six-yard box.

From the resulting corner Sons saw claims for a penalty fall on deaf ears, with Spartans instead awarded a free-kick after the ball struck an arm in a packed penalty area.

Shortly after, the home side put the result beyond any doubt.

Ethan Drysdale’s cross caught out substitute Aron Lynas, who slipped as he attempted to clear – presenting the ball to McNulty, and the veteran forward thundered home from point-blank range.

A sharp Long save, his first serious action of note back in a Sons shirt, denied the lively Stowe a quickfire third for the hosts, before a frustrating afternoon for the Sons ended with more missed chances.

First Ally Roy nodded Ryan Blair’s wicked corner wide at the far post, before McIntosh again found himself clean through – but this time he elected to square the ball for a teammate rather than shoot, and saw the danger cleared.
