Vastly experienced forward Leighton returned to Scottish football with Dumbarton in July 2025, after making history as the first Scottish player to play in Jordan.

He burst onto the scene with hometown club Dundee as a teenager, memorably netting some crucial goals as the administration-hit Dens Park club overcame a 25 point deduction to remain in the second tier.

Loan spells with Montrose and Arbroath followed, before he made the switch to Links Park on a permanent basis.

Two successful seasons with Peterhead followed, before Leighton tried his hand overseas with a switch to Icelandic outfit UMF Selfoss.

10 goals in 25 games on his return to Scottish football with Arbroath was followed by 17 in 41 appearances for Airdrieonians under former Sons boss Ian Murray.

Those performances caught the eye of English Conference side Wrexham, and Leighton scored three times in 13 games during his time in Wales – before a loan spell at Blyth Spartans.

He returned to Scotland for three impressive seasons at Cove Rangers, helping the side lift the League One title in 2022 alongside Morgyn Neill, and his the net eight times during the Toonsers only season in the Championship.

A third spell at Arbroath was followed by half a season at Queen of the South, before he made history by becoming the first Scot to play In Jordan when he signed for Amman-based Al Ahli.

Sons saw off interest from League 1 to secure his signature on July 10 2025. After finishing the season as our top scorer with 16 goals, winning Sonstrust Player of the Year and being named in the PFA League 2 Team of the season, he extended his deal in the summer of 2026.
