Match Report

Two goals in as many minutes saw Dumbarton make it four straight wins with success against Forfar Athletic.

Frank McKeown’s men were second best for most of the first-half and trailed at half-time thanks to Lucas Perrie’s early header.

However, quickfire strikes from Robbie Cleary and Owen Hartington ensured that all three points remained in G82 for the fourth straight match.

New signing Chris McKenna, who joined during the week on loan from East Kilbride, was thrown straight in for his debut in one of two changes – with Josiah Sowa also earning a start in place of the injured Deryn Lang.

Without the in-form hitman however, Sons made hard work of the early exchanges, as the visitors controlled the ball with the wind at their backs – before racing into an early lead.

The Loons found space on the edge of the Dumbarton box, with Aaron Arnott clipping in a cross that was perfected to Luca Perrie to nod into the net – unopposed – from six yards.

Perrie came close to a second on the 20 minute mark as Ethan Crombie set off on a driving run and slipped the Dundee loanee in on goal, but Mason Munn got down sharply to save.

Controversy arrived on the half hour mark as Mikey Doyle set off on a charging run that was crudely ended by a ferocious challenge from ex-Son Aron Lynas – with referee Euan Birch deciding that a yellow card was sufficient punishment, to the anger of the home support.

Having started the game poorly however Sons finally settled and began to create chances.

Owen Hartington set off on a lung-busting run that saw him set Josiah Sowa free in behind Lynas, but he was denied a third goal as a Son by a sharp save from the onrushing Neil Stafford.

Hartington then decided to try himself with a 25 yard piledriver, but again Sons were left cursing the Loons keeper – as he flew across his goal to touch the ball over for a corner.

Half-time probably came at a bad time for Sons having just enjoyed their strongest period of the game, with the opening 15 minutes of the second 45 scrappy and played mainly in the midfield.

Skipper Mikey Doyle had other ideas, with the flying full-back single-handedly hauling his side back into the game.

After seeing penalty shouts fall on deaf ears when Robbie Cleary’s cross hit the arm of Mackenzie Lemon, Sons got themselves level with a goal of real quality.

Scott Honeyman timed his pass perfectly to slip Doyle clear down the right, with the skipper whipping in a superb cross for Cleary to bullet a header beyond the helpless Stafford.

And incredibly, just 90 seconds after levelling, Sons found themselves ahead.

Doyle’s long ball forward caught out Matty Allan and set Leighton McIntosh charging clear.

The forward’s cross was only pushed out by keeper Stafford as far as Owen Hartington, who was the coolest man in the stadium – taking a touch to set himself before swivelling and wrong-footing the stranded Stafford to find the bottom corner.

Suddenly all momentum was with Dumbarton as the shellshocked visitors struggled to find a response.

Tom Lang’s booming header from a Robbie Cleary corner was superbly touched onto the bar by Stafford, before debut boy Chris McKenna had a header from a Josh Todd delivery cleared off the line.

Lang then should’ve sealed the points as McKenna’s knockdown found the central defender on the six yard line, but his arrowed effort whistled narrowly over the bar.

There was still time for one scare however, as the visitors threw everything they had forward in the final moments.

Mason Munn punched a deep delivery to the edge of the area which was sent back goalwards – but Lang was perfectly positioned to block on the line and clear the danger, as Sons stayed firm to ensure that they ended a hectic run of home games with a perfect record.
