Dumbarton Women wrapped up their home campaign in emphatic fashion with an 8–0 thrashing of visitors Benburb at East End Park on Sunday afternoon.
Head Coach Gerry Gallacher made two changes to the starting XI, with Natasha Lewis and Olivia Oliver returning to the lineup. Gemma Smith dropped to the bench, while Neamh MacNeil was unavailable. The team continued in their new diamond formation.
The hosts controlled the match from the outset. The outstanding duo of Catriona McAllister and Eva McInnes linked up early on, with the captain opening the scoring via a deflection.
It was nearly two within five minutes when Mirrin Esdale played a beautiful diagonal ball over the Benburb defence. McInnes controlled it superbly and lobbed the keeper, with the ball striking the underside of the bar. Benburb goalkeeper Ashley Kelmore gathered at the second attempt, although the ball appeared to have crossed the line. However, the referee gave the benefit of the doubt to the Govan side’s keeper.
Dumbarton doubled their lead shortly after, with McAllister again on the scoresheet. Olivia Oliver played the in-form striker through, and despite two good stops from Kelmore, McAllister eventually forced the ball in, showing the same outstanding determination that has made her a constant threat to SWFL West defences all season.
The home side continued to dominate for the remainder of the half. McInnes made it three before Gemma Russell added a fourth, finishing from a pinpoint Gemma Smith cross. Smith’s delivery was consistent throughout the match, regularly putting the Benburb defence under pressure.
The second half began much like the first, with Dumbarton immediately on the front foot. Natasha Lewis was fouled inside the box, earning a penalty. The tenacious full-back stepped up to take it herself but unfortunately fired over the bar.
Goalkeeper Kira Swallow had a relatively quiet afternoon, thanks largely to composed and disciplined defensive work from Esdale and Niamh McAleer. She was alert, however, when called into action, making a solid stop following a Benburb counterattack after the missed penalty.
On the hour mark, Dumbarton were awarded another penalty, this time for a push on Alisha Biggerstaff. Gemma Smith made no mistake, blasting her strike past substitute keeper Emily Hussey to make it 5–0.
Midway through the half, Dumbarton added a sixth. After excellent work on the right flank from Hannah McGhee, a recent addition to the team who is showing a noticeable improvement game by game, the ball found McAllister in the box.
She dropped her shoulder and rifled another superb finish into the net, continuing her fine form.
McAllister completed her hat-trick moments later, finishing low across the goalkeeper to make it 7–0, matching Dumbarton’s scoreline from the reverse fixture earlier in the season.
In the final minute, Gemma Russell grabbed her second of the afternoon, converting Dumbarton’s third penalty to complete the 8–0 rout, an emphatic way to end their home campaign with a gr-eight display.

Head Coach Gerry Gallacher praised his side’s performance.
He said: “The build-up play was first class, and the girls held their shape, creating loads of chances from that.
“On such a warm day, I loved how our big squad rotated on and off the pitch without the performance levels ever dropping.
“Benburb held their own and passed the ball well, but our composed and hard-working defence dealt comfortably with most attacks. Natasha Lewis was my standout performer.”
Looking ahead to the final game, Gallacher added: “It’s great to take such a performance into our last match against league winners Bishopton. They’ll still be focused with a promotion playoff to come, so we’ll need to be just as sharp as we were today.”
Gemma Russell, who netted twice, emphasised that the team didn’t underestimate their opponents.
She said: “We’ve seen Benburb’s recent results, and they’ve been improving, we knew they weren’t a side to look down on.
They changed their formation early, but we adapted and stuck to our game plan. I honestly think we played a blinder today. I don’t think it could’ve gone any better.”
She also praised the diamond formation the team has used in recent games:
“Having that extra player in midfield always gives you an advantage, especially when the opposition is outnumbered there.
“They played a three, we had a four, so we always had that extra player. It really helped today, I hope we stick with it going forward.”
Dumbarton will close out their SWFL West campaign next Sunday away to champions Bishopton at Park Mains High School, full match details will be announced during the week via our socials.
The Sons currently sit fifth but still have an outside chance of finishing third. That spot remains open as rivals Drumchapel United and Saint Anthony’s face off, while Gleniffer Thistle host West Park United. Only a win will keep Dumbarton in contention, while keeping an eye out on results elsewhere.
