Stephen joined Dumbarton in December 2025 as an assistant to Frank McKeown.

A former midfielder, he started his playing career with Hearts – and played almost 100 SPL matches during his time at Tynecastle. Two seasons at Dunfermline Athletic followed, before Simmons won the Division Two title with Raith Rovers – either side of two spells at Queen of the South.

He ended his senior career with Alloa Athletic, playing a key role in the Wasps’ rise through the divisions.

Simmons moved into coaching with Brechin City in 2021, spending three successful years with the Highland League side working with Andy Kirk and Gavin Price. After a spell out of the game, he returned to coaching as one of Frank McKeown’s assistants alongside Mark Docherty.
