McInnes Seeking New Faces to Push Women’s Side Forward

Women’s team manager Kenny McInnes says the focus ahead of the new season is on adding depth and competition to an already talented squad.

The Sons head into the campaign with a young group that has developed together over several years, but McInnes believes adding the right players can help push the team further.

“I don’t think we’re weak in any particular area,” he explained. “I think we just need a bit more depth to the squad.”

“Last season we suffered injuries at the start of the campaign, and it would be good to bring in three or four players who can challenge the current first team.”

For McInnes, competition for places is vital.

“It’s never good when players feel they can turn up on a Sunday and are guaranteed a game,” he revealed.

“That competition is important because it pushes everyone and means if you have injuries or need to use the bench, you know you’re bringing on quality.”

The manager also highlighted the importance of the club’s pathway, with many players having progressed from Dumbarton United and local youth football.

“The vast majority of our players have been with us since under-9s. They came through that pathway and developed together.

“We’ve also brought in players like Ellie Vernal and Kirstin Breslin, who came in towards the end of last season and did a great job for us.”

With opportunities available, McInnes hopes players who want to join the club can see a clear route into senior football.

“Any girl who joins Dumbarton Football Club now will be given that opportunity to play in the women’s team.”

With the squad set to compete once again in the SWFL Central-West, the ScottishPower Regional League Cup and make their Scottish Gas Women’s Scottish Cup debut this campaign, the timing has never been better to get involved as our women’s team move into The Rock – Sponsored by Marbill Coaches.
