Match Report

Dumbarton Women kicked off their SWFL Central-West league season, once again facing Gleniffer Thistle Ladies.

This time the performance was much improved, playing at Mountblow Pitches, Dalmuir during the Dumbarton Rocks festival.

Despite an early setback, Gemma Smith scored a superb curling effort to level the score. However, Thistle’s experience would prove too much and despite another superb strike from Smith, this time from a free kick, the ladies would fall to a 5-2 defeat.

Kenny McInnes however, took positives post match.

“We knew we were going to have a tough match today against a side who have strengthened over the summer. Having lost a number of players recently and a few first team players unavailable, we asked some players to do specific jobs for us and I was really pleased they carried these out,” he said.

“They were worthy of their win but we can feel slightly sorry for ourselves with a few of the goals we conceded.

“Gemma played her first competitive match of the season and she was the best player on the pitch. A constant threat and scored two goals that would grace the game at any level.

“Niamh McAleer was tremendous throughout against last season’s top goalscorer. The spine of the team held together and a few new players would help us bounce back and kick on for the season ahead.”
