A goal in either half consigned Dumbarton to a 2-0 defeat against Inverness Caledonian Thistle this afternoon.
Alfie Bavidge opened the scoring after a quarter of an hour when he bundled the ball home from close range.
Sons were up against for much of the first-half and nearly found themselves 2-0 behind when Billy McKay rounded Brett Long but couldn’t apply the finish.
The Sons goalkeeper was then forced off after picking up an injury from a corner with Paddy O’Neil coming on, making a superb save with the the last touch of the half to tip a volley over the crossbar.
Dumbarton started the second period brighter and got into a number of dangerous positions but couldn’t find a way through the defence.
Charlie Gilmour added a second midway through the half when he fired a shot through a busy penalty area and into the net.
The introduction of James Hilton provided Dumbarton with a spark in the final third as Cammy Clark hit the crossbar and Finlay Gray was denied by a good stop and then the outside of the post but they couldn’t get back in the game.
Sons are back at the Rock next week when they host Arbroath.
