Whilst the clubs first-team remain on their Summer break, Dumbarton supporters can still get their Sons fix this weekend with a double header of cup final action.
Dumbarton under-18’s are set to take on Giffnock SC under-18’s at New Western Park, home of West of Scotland Football League side Renfrew, in the final of West Regional Cup on Saturday whilst the clubs under-17’s will take on Thorn Athletic under-17’s at the same venue in the SYFA West Cup Final on Sunday.
The under-18’s had a strong season with a third placed finish in Division One of the Paisley Johnstone and District Youth Football League behind some strong opposition.
Sons had the likes of Scottish Cup finalists Clydebank and Hillwood to contend with as well this weekends opponents, Giffnock.
Boss David Lavery reflected on what has been a successful season so far – but wants his side to be rewarded with a trophy this weekend.
He told the clubs website: “The season has went really well. As a brand new team competing in arguably the best grassroots league at our age group in the country we finished third.
“When you look at the season as a whole I don’t think it could have went too much better but we want to top it off this weekend with some silverware.
“Saturday is a massive game for the boys and the team as we take on Giffnock who won our league and have been very good all season so it is going to be a tough match, however having already beaten Giffnock at the beginning of the season there is absolutely nothing to fear.
“I’m hoping there will be a good wee crowd of Dumbarton fans who might make the game with the first team’s season being finished and they can get behind the boys to help them lift the cup.”
Lavery was also delighted with the impact that two of his players had on the clubs first-team this season.
He added: “Another huge positive for the team was seeing two of the boys play for the senior team with Declan Breen playing in the SPFL Trust Trophy and Luca Vata, who moved up to the first team and went on to feature in a number of games.”
Elsewhere, the under-17’s finished seventh in Division One of the PJDYFL but Head Coach Brian Deeley insists his side have saved their best showing for knockout competitions.
The Young Sons are right up against it versus a team who are chasing down a quadruple but Deeley knows his troops will give everything.
He said: “It is a great achievement for us to get to the regional cup final in our first year as Dumbarton FC under-17’s.
“In the final we face Thorn Athletic who are league and cup champions and also Scottish Cup champions so it will be tough game against the best team in Scotland at our age group who are going for the clean sweep.
“It’s over 90mins and our squad will give 100% and we have our kept our best performances for cup games this season.”
Both games will kick-off at 2.00pm at New Western Park, PA4 9EF, with admission fees of £3 for adults and £1 for concessions.
