SONS newly formed under-13s took part in the AMP Tournament last Saturday, reaching the semi-final stage of the competition.
The 1999 age group, who have just recently been recruited from the local boys clubs and community and who have been together for less than 2 weeks participated in Group 2 with St. Mirren, Clyde and Lochgilphead.
The boys acquitted themselves very well and demonstrated not only their ability to play, but more importantly, the willingness to learn ; qualities that are expected from all our youth teams.
Their positivity and desire to do well resulted in the team qualifying from the group stages and into the semi-final following a 1-1- draw v St Mirren, an excellent 2-0 victory v Clyde and a 3-0 victory v Lochgilphead.
The youngsters were paired against Queen’s Park in the semi final and again put up a very spirited performance but unfortunately just came up that bit short losing 1-0.
Head of Youth Jim Chapman who attended the tournament in support of coaches David Lyden and scout Alan McDevitt said: “From a personal point of view it, the performance of our 1999’s was very encouraging and has shown that there is talent being produced locally by all the boys clubs and associations.
“With the excellent assistance and support of all my youth coaches and staff we look forward to work and continue with the development of this squad of players and hopefully we can see them follow the many others who have progressed towards the 1st team in the coming years.
“I would like to extend our sincerest thanks to Oban Saints for the invitation and also their professionalism and organisation of the tournament.
“It has again provided a very positive experience for our latest recruits and also helps strengthen the links and relationships that the Club has formed with our friends in Oban and Lochgilphead, together with our fellow Clubs’ who play in the SFAs Youth Development Programme.”
