WILSON BRACE EARNS VICTORY

Tuesday 4th May 2021

DUMBARTON welcomed Peterhead to the C & G Systems Stadium for their final league match, and earned a priceless three points in a 3-2 victory which put them above Clyde in the League One table.

Manager Jim Duffy made two changes with Nick McAllister and Jaime Wilson returning to the starting line-up for a game pivotal to the relegation battle.

The first ten minutes were evenly contested, but in the 15th minute Adam Frizzell drove towards goal only to see his shot pushed away. Next Rico Quitongo’s cross was cleared and skipper Stuart Carswell shot just wide from 25 yards.

A minute later Sons got the start they wanted when Wilson was one on one with keeper Lenny Wilson and curled the ball into the net for a wonderful opener.

Keeper Sam Ramsbottom kept the lead intact in the 31st minute with a great save from Niah Payne, but two minutes later the visitors levelled when Steven Boyd headed home from close range. It was all square at the break.

Early in the second half Ryan McGeever was injured, and he was replaced by Nat Wedderburn. Next a Ross Forbes free kick went over the bar, but then Peterhead took the lead in the 62nd minute when veteran striker Derek Lyle netted.

Robert Jones and Tomas Brindley came on for Quitongo and James Wallace, and in the 80th minute Sons levelled when Morgyn Neill headed home a Forbes corner. Immediately afterwards Conner Duthie and Ruaridh Langan replaced Frizzell and Rabin Omar.

The 90th minute saw a dramatic winner as a Forbes lob was headed home by Wilson (pictured). Now who is in the relegation play-off all depends on Clyde v East Fife on Thursday.
