IT is with very deep sadness that we have learned that our former player Walter Smith, who went on to become manager of Rangers and Scotland, has passed away aged 73.
Walter joined Dumbarton from Dundee United in 1975 and played 64 games in a Sons shirt. He was part of the squad who reached the 1976 Scottish Cup semi-final.
After ending his playing career, Walter went on to become a legendary manager with Rangers, Everton and Scotland.
As Rangers manager, he won ten league titles, five Scottish Cups and six League Cups, and reached the 2008 UEFA Cup final.
The thoughts of everybody at Dumbarton FC are with Walter’s family and friends at this extremely sad time.
