STEPHEN is 42 and has been a Macmillan Volunteer for the last year and a half.
He committed to the project after a road accident left him with health issues that has meant that it has been difficult to find regular employment.
He is keen to promote the opportunity to volunteer to others stating : “Volunteering with Macmillan has been a great experience.
“I have met some really nice people when we were doing the training that is provided and I have been matched with four or five clients over the last year.
“I would never have thought of volunteering to support others going through a difficult time in their lives but I saw a poster in my local Boots and thought I would give it a try.
“I have had some personal experience of looking after family members who have been ill and have been able to use this when supporting the person I have been matched with.
“The support that I have been able to provide has been varied depending on the person’s situation. Sometimes I have been there to sit with someone to give their carer some respite and to allow them to do their shopping without having to worry about their loved one who is ill.
“Sometimes I have spent time with someone who lives on their own. My visits would often break the monotony of their day and give them something to look forward to. Volunteering is a very rewarding experience and I would encourage anyone to get involved.”
If you think you could spare some time and be involved with the MacMillan Volunteer Service, then please complate the contact form below and we will pass your details to the appropriate people.
