VITAL WIN FOR SONS AT ALLOA

Saturday 5th December 2015

Two second half goals on a cold, windy afternoon in Clackmannanshire saw Dumbarton claim an important three points against Alloa Athletic to bolster their SPFL Championship campaign.

Both sides struggled with the elements in the opening period. However, as the half continued more chances began to be created for the visitors.

Eventually the deadlock was broken in the the 71st minute of the second half, when a corner from ex-Alloa man Mark Docherty curled into the net to give Sons a vital lead.

Having fired over shortly beforehand, Grant Gallagher added a second goal for Dumbarton on 87 minutes, with an impressive diving header from Eamon Brophy.

Brophy nearly added a third goal himself right at the end of the match, curling the ball just wide of the bar.

It was a solid, battling performance from Dumbarton, following a tough midweek visit to Ibrox.

The result puts Sons back up from ninth to seventh position in the league, on 14 points.

St Mirren and Livingston, in eighth and ninth places and 12 and 11 points respectively, have a game in hand.
