TRICKY TRIP IN PLAYOFF SEMI-FINAL

Friday 7th May 2021

IT is the fixture Dumbarton hoped to avoid – but tomorrow they return to action at Stranraer in the first leg of the playoff semi-final.

Despite late heroics to claim three points against Peterhead on Tuesday, Clyde’s win over East Fife last night means that Sons have finished the League One season in ninth place.

The two-legged tie against the Blues is the first of two they must now successfully navigate to claim a place in the division next season.

And with so much at stake, manager Jim Duffy wants the winning momentum afforded by the win over Peterhead to continue.

He said: “It is disappointing that Tuesday’s victory ultimately could not save us from the play-off, but we must now face the task we have.

“Stranraer have been generating decent results this season and have run up some big victories in the league, so we know what a threat they have going forward.

“It will be our responsibility to deal with that, and to continue the goalscoring habit we rediscovered on Tuesday night.

“We have had a first class workrate from our players this season and now we need it four more times to ensure we remain in League One.”

Ryan McGeever did not train last night after going off injured against Peterhead and is the latest addition to the injury list.

He joins PJ Crossan, Isaac Layne, Sam Wardrop, Daniel Church and Joshua Bradley-Hurst among the players who are set to be unavailable tomorrow.

However, after a successful return from the bench on Tuesday, Nat Wedderburn (pictured) is in contention for a place in the side.

The match at Stair Park is behind closed doors and details of how to stream the game are as per our previous story.

After tomorrow’s first leg, the teams will reconvene at the C&G Systems Stadium on Tuesday for the second leg.

Tomorrow’s game is our first trip to Stranraer since October 2019, which ended goalless. We won the previous visit, eight months earlier, 3-0.

Chris Graham is the referee for tomorrow’s game, and will have assistance from Joseph Lawson and David Dunne. Kevin Graham is the fourth official.
