THE BEAST IS BACK!

Friday 19th August 2022

STRIKER John Gemmell has returned to Dumbarton, 15 years after he previously played for the club, on a deal until the end of the season.

The 6ft 4in frontman, who turns 38 next month, featured as a trialist and registered an assist in Saturday’s 4-0 win at home to Annan Athletic.

It was his 52nd game in a Dumbarton shirt. The previous 51 were during his first spell with the club, which was from 2005 to 2007, and he scored eight goals during that time.

His last game as a signed Dumbarton player was in a Scottish Cup tie away to Celtic in January 2007. He joined Bellshill Athletic at the end of that season.

Since then, John has played for Albion Rovers (three times), Cowdenbeath, Montrose, Stenhousemuir and Clyde at senior level.

He then moved into the junior ranks (later the West of Scotland League) with Hurlford United, Arthurlie, Cambuslang Rangers and Troon.

He returned to Cambuslang last season and scored 17 goals in 28 games.

Manager Stevie Farrell said: “John is a hugely experienced striker at this level and has trained with us in the last few weeks.

“We have seen how hard he has worked to get another chance at senior level and we feel he has a lot to give us this season.”

Look out for an interview with John on the club website shortly, and on our social media channels.
