DUMBARTON made the best possible start to the new Ladbrokes SPFL Championship season, securing a morale-boosting 2-1 win over promotion favourites Hibernian at the Cheaper Insurance Direct Stadium.
The game started in the best possible way, with an early goal for Sons. Willie Gibson’s low driven free kick was turned home by Gregor Buchanan, after fine hold-up play from Steven Craig.
Hibs struck back to make it 1-1 after some miscommunication between Andy Graham and ‘keeper Mark Brown allowed the dangerous Dominique Malonga in to fire home an equaliser.
Garry Fleming almost put Dumbarton ahead before the break when he cracked a shot against the post. But at half time the honours were still even.
In a competitive second half, Sons went ahead again after a late challenge on Kevin Cawley resulted in a free kick. Up stepped Gibson (pictured) to curl the ball over the wall and into the top corner.
It was a sensational strike that gave the home side a precious 2-1 lead.
Dumbarton had to use all their determination and guile to resist immense, continuous pressure from Hibernian as the game drew to a close.
They held on for a fantastic win and an inspiring start to the league campaign.
Next up for Sons is a demanding away trip to St Mirren.
