STALEMATE FOR SONS

Saturday 4th October 2014

NEITHER side could find a breakthrough in an even, ragged 0-0 encounter between Dumbarton and Cowdenbeath at the Rock this afternoon.

Sons started with a sense of determination, but then lost momentum, finding themselves pushed back as the first half proceeded.

Both sides had their chances. Garry Fleming, Jordan Kirkpatrick and Mark Gilhaney all came fairly close to putting the home side ahead.

Cowden produced a series of good moves and looked more threatening, but Kudus Oyenuga could not match speed and invention with crisp finishing or a decent final pass.

The game remained a disappointing affair after the break, before picking up pace in the final half hour.

Kirkpatrick tested Cowdenbeath ‘keeper Robbie Thomson from range on the hour, before being replaced up front by Colin Nish.

Archie Campbell came agonisingly close for Dumbarton on 75 minutes, as Gilhaney put him through only to see the ball deflected away at the last moment.

Scott Taggart was named Sonstrust Man of the Match by this afternoon’s match sponsor David Richardson.

The draw extends Dumbarton’s unbeaten run to five matches. Next up are two away games in Edinburgh, before the arrival of Rangers for a home game in three weeks’ time.
