DUMBARTON started off their pre-season campaign by easing to a 1-0 victory over Lowland League champions Edinburgh City at a sunny Ainslie Park this afternoon.
The first half started in lively fashion, with Sons pressing early, but the game seemed to lose shape as it progressed.
Dumbarton dominated possession. However Edinburgh City marked tight and there were few clear chances for either side in the opening period.
Sons’ new winger Willie Gibson looked the most creative up front and had a couple of opportunities himself as the new-look team started to get the measure of each other in competitive action.
After the break the pace picked up again with fresh legs coming on for both sides.
A few minutes into the second period trialist Routledge stole the ball off the ‘keeper and layers it back for another trialist, Moutinho, who struck into the side netting. It should have been the opener.
On 67 minutes Sons went in front after some persistent attacking. Gibson followed up on his initially blocked shot to rocket the ball into the top of the net from a sharp near post angle.
There were no further goals, but new Dumbarton manager will be pleased with a first win and a more purposeful second half display.
