SONS WIN AWAY AT MONTROSE

Saturday 9th March 2019

DUMBARTON grabbed another vital three points with a cheeky 3-1 victory over Montrose at Links Park this afternoon.

Both teams struggled with the high winds in the opening 15 minutes, with Sons enjoying slightly more possession up front.

They were rewarded on 17 minutes. Dom Thomas’ first effort on goal was saved by Montrose’s Fleming, but the wily forward reacted quickest to smash the ball home from a few yards out.

Dumbarton’s lead was threatened moments later when Rennie was fouled in the area. But he went for power with his penalty kick and cannoned the ball of the crossbar and away. A let-off for the visitors.

Then on 38 minutes superb movement from Cammy Ballantyne provided a cross for Calum Gallagher, who finished into the corner with his left foot to put Sons two up.

After the break the wind subsided, the tempo of the game increased, and Montrose started to look well in control as they pulled a goal back.

On 51 minutes a cross from the left was met by Dillon, who looped a header into the net unmarked.

Suddenly Dumbarton were struggling to stay in the game, in spite of being in front. However, completely against the run of play, the men from the Rock were suddenly 3-1 ahead.

The wind had a huge part to play as Fleming’s kick was caught in the wind, brought down by Gallagher, and then volleyed home neatly by Thomas.

Despite concerted pressure from the home side Sons held on for another crucial win, extending their unbeaten run to seven games in League One.
