DUMBARTON battled for every minute of a pulsating game against St Mirren at the Cheaper Insurance Direct Stadium this afternoon, running out 1-0 winners.
Despite an aggressive performance from St Mirren, Sons played well and created a decent handful of chances in a fast-paced, competitive first half.
With just a couple of minutes on the clock Dumbarton had a goal disallowed. Kelly was pressured into slipping the ball into his own net, but Grant Gallagher was adjudged to have pushed him in the process.
The Buddies went straight on the offensive in the second half. But it was Sons who deservedly took the lead on 55 minutes when Gary Fleming made a twisting turn in the area and hit a blazing strike into the top corner of the net.
Both teams continued to attack furiously. Fleming had another fine shot blocked before missing the rebound midway through the half.
On 82 minutes Dumbarton had another goal disallowed, as Donald McCallum’s tap in on the end of a fine move was ruled offside. The result leaves Sons in seventh place in the Championship, five points clear of today’s opponents.
It was a tense final few minutes, but Sons held on with solid defending and some good counter-attacks.
