SONS SECURE VITAL WIN OVER COWDEN

Saturday 27th April 2013

DUMBARTON have claimed all three points in their last away game of the season. The crucial 3-2 win over Cowdenbeath guarantees First Division football at the Rock in 2013/14.

Sons started the game in determined mood, but went behind against the run of play after a quarter of an hour, when Craig Moore struck the ball home following a fast counter-attack.

Twenty nervy minutes followed, until Scott Agnew stepped up to equalise for Dumbarton, lobbing the ‘keeper beautifully from 25 yards, to the obvious delight of the large travelling support.

Four minutes later Jim Lister added a second goal with a powerful header. Then, just before half time, Agnew calmly converted a penalty following an infringement in the area by Cowdenbeath player-manager Colin Cameron.

Sons went into the break with a commanding 3-1 advantage and stayed well in control of the game for most of the second half. Indeed, they missed several opportunities to extend their lead.

On 88 minutes Kyle Miller headed home to claim a goal back for Cowdenbeath. But it was not enough to stop the Dumbarton party.

As the final whistle went, Sons players, staff and supporters celebrated the remarkable achievement of at least a seventh place finish in Irn Bru SFL Division One in season 2012/13.

With league safety secured, the final home game against champions Partick Thistle at the Bet Butler Stadium on 4th May is set to be a very special occasion.
