A DUMBARTON side comprised mainly of youngsters could not match the solidity of what was virtually an East Stirlingshire first team this evening, going down 2-0 in the Stirlingshire Cup semi-final at Ochilview.
A goalless first half saw Sons start with some promise, with experienced operator Chris Turner marshalling the lines from a central position.
However the Shire, sitting mid-table in SPFL League Two, soon started to assert their experience and determination, looking more purposeful up front as the game progressed.
The damage was done by the home side in the second half — first through a close-range effort from Michael Wallace after a goalmouth scramble, and later from an unmarked Chris Townley’s looping header on 77 minutes.
Dumbarton posed little attacking threat during the match, though Donald McCallum came closest with a fierce drive that just shaved the far post a few minutes before Townley’s clincher.
East Stirlingshire will now face Stenhousemuir in the regional competition final at a time and venue to be determined.
