DUMBARTON have been knocked out of the Petrofac Training Cup, losing 1-0 in extra time to an efficient Queens Park in the second round.
The Hampden Park side started in determined fashion, pressing Sons back when they could and otherwise getting men solidly behind the ball to deny the visitors space.
Dumbarton’s best chance in a generally quiet first half came from a Grant Gallagher shot that flashed just past the far post.
There was little to separate the teams in the second period, though Queen’s Park had several promising opportunities.
Garry Fleming had the ball in the net for Sons on 67 minutes, but it was disallowed for offside.
There was drama right at the end of normal time when Dumbarton were awarded a penalty, only for Fleming to fire high and wide. The home side then almost scored on the break.
Early in the first period of extra time Queens went in front, with substitute Joe Bradley firing in from close range after a defensive mix-up.
After that there was no way back for Dumbarton, who now return to focus on their league campaign with a big home match against Queen of the South coming up on Saturday.
