SONS OUT OF CHALLENGE CUP

Tuesday 13th August 2019

DUMBARTON are out of the Tunnocks Caramel Wafer Cup at the first hurdle, losing out 1-0 to Premiership side St Mirren’s Colts in the Round 2 South tie at the C&G Systems Stadium.

The first half was a level affair, with the two sides evenly balanced and few chances at either end.

However on 30 minutes the young Buddies broke the deadlock, when Josh Jack smashed in a free kick from more than 20 yards to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

A few minutes before half time Kyle Hutton, on for Jordan McMillan, almost equalised. But his piledriving shot was very well saved by keeper Lyness.

In the second half Dumbarton sought to up the tempo, with Isaac Layne and Conor Scullion (pictured) coming close on 54 minutes.

Try as they may, Sons simply could not find a way through for the remainder of the half.

So Dumbarton, finalists in 2017/88, are out of the Scottish Challenge Cup this season, as the St Mirren Colts progress to Round 3.

Next up for the Sons is a trip to Peterhead for in SPFL League One at the weekend, on Saturday 17th August.
