DESPITE a couple of setbacks lately, Dumbarton’s colts have a significant piece of history to their credit this month.
The Sons reserve side became the first team to beat Rangers FC in their new incarnation when they travelled to Murray Park at the beginning of October, securing a 2-0 victory thanks to a brace from Ryan Metcalfe in front of 160 spectators.

Stirling Albion went on to beat the ‘Gers 1-0 in the Irn Bru SFL Third Division the following weekend… but Dumbarton got there first. Definitely one for the record books.
Asked when Sons had last beaten Rangers in a first team or reserve format, club historian Jim McAllister commented: “Dumbarton won 1-0 at Ibrox in a reserve match in Season 1973/4
He added: “This was a time when reserve games were also played on Saturday’s. Both first team fixtures were called off and both selected near full strength sides.”
Those with long memories will recall that Dumbarton tied the first ever Scottish League Championship with Glasgow Rangers in season 1890/91, before becoming the first outright winners in 1891/92.
