SONS LOSE TO RANGERS in HARD-FOUGHT GAME

Saturday 3rd January 2015

DUMBARTON put up a brave fight against second-placed Rangers at Ibrox this afternoon, losing out 3-1 after going ahead early on.

Sons started in confident mood, enjoying most of the attacking play in the first quarter of an hour.

They were rewarded on 15 minutes when Andy Graham poked the ball in from close range following a corner, to the delight of a vocal band of visiting supporters.

Rangers were level against the run of play on 22 minutes, however. Jon Daly made it 1-1, capitalising on a bit of luck from a deflection.

Before the break the home side took the lead on 42 minutes. Steven Smith provided the assist for Lee Wallace to strike home hard and low from outside the area.

In the second half Rangers sought to press their advantage but squandered a number of openings.

It was one-way traffic for too much of the time. Even so, when Sons broke they looked dangerous, especially in the last ten minutes.

As the game drew to a close Dumbarton pushed for an equaliser, but it was not to be. Into time added on Dean Shiels burst through to make it 3-1.

The result leaves Sons in seventh place in the SPFL Championship. Next up is a home match against division leaders Heart of Midlothian.
