DUMBARTON were punished for a series of mistakes away to Airdrieonians this afternoon, going down 3-1 in a lacklustre game at the Penny Cars Stadium.
It was a nightmare start for Sons. After a bad mix-up at the back, Calum Gallagher pounced to put the home side ahead within the first minute, stroking the ball into an empty goal.
On 16 minutes Dumbarton were level. Reghan Tumlity crossed from the right, the ball looped over ‘keeper Hutton, crashed off the post and deflected into the net.
Neither side had established a firm grasp on the game, but another defensive lapse on 35 minutes gave Dale Carrick the opportunity to drill the ball from inside the box for 2-1 to Airdrieonians.
Four minutes later there was more self-inflicted misery for Sons, as Carrick stepped up again to smash the ball home into the top of the net to make it 3-1 before half time.
The match swung backwards and forwards in the second half. Dumbarton thought they had pulled a goal back when Ryan McGeever (pictured) directed a powerful header goal-ward, only for the Diamonds’ David Hutton to pull off a superb diving save.
Despite a couple of best chances, Sons could not find a way back into the match, and the home side grabbed all three points in an uninspiring League One tussle. Even so, Dumbarton remain in fifth place in the division.
