SONS LOSE OUT TO ANNAN ON PENALTIES

Tuesday 25th July 2017

DUMBARTON lost to Annan Athletic 4-3 in a penalty shootout, following a 0-0 Betfred Scottish League Cup draw against the Third Division side at the Your Radio 103FM Stadium this evening.

There were few chances for either side in the opening 45 minutes, with a red card for Sons striker Christian Nade being the main talking point.

On 32 minutes the Frenchman had looked unhappy at his side not being awarded a penalty for an apparent handball.

A minute later, the assistant called the referee over for a consultation and Nade was red-carded.

On 52 minutes Sons’ new signing Mark Stewart had the ball in the back of the net. But the celebrations of the home fans were cut short when the offside flag went up.

Annan hit the post a few minutes later, before Dumbarton were unable to capitalise on a couple of set piece opportunities around the hour mark.

The visitors hit the woodwork for a second time on 70 minutes, as Ryan Stevenson’s effort ricocheted out before finally being cleared.

Shortly afterwards Annan Athletic went down to ten men themselves, when Moxen was sent off for a second yellow card.

With neither side being able to secure a breakthrough, the match then went to a penalty shootout decider, under Betfred Cup rules.

Again, Sons came out the losing side, with Stevenson striking the fatal blow for Annan.

On Saturday 29th July, Dumbarton head to Rugby Park for their last Group E game against Premiership side Kilmarnock.
