SONS GRAB WIN AT AIRDRIE

Saturday 31st October 2020

DUMBARTON produced an excellent performance in appalling weather to beat third-placed Airdrieonians 2-0 at the Penny Cars Stadium this afternoon.

It was a personal triumph for striker Jaime Wilson (pictured), starting for Sons for the first time, as he scored the first goal in the first half and forced Leon McCann into conceding an own goal after the break.

The match, transferred to Airdrie because of the weather-hit pitch at Dumbarton, had an unusual start with the teams emerging from opposite sides of the ground. In goal for Sons was Chris Smith after Kevin Dabrowski was injured in the warm-up, and he was soon in action.

The opener came in 22 minutes when Robert Jones set up Wilson to beat keeper David Hutton. The closest the home side came to levelling before the interval was in the 42nd minute, when Smith and Ryan McGeever combined to foil Kyle MacDonald.

After the break Smith produced more good saves, but in the 60th minute a mazy run by Wilson, weaving past defenders, ended with his shot diverting off McCann for no.2.

In the 88th minute Ruaridh Langan came on for Wilson, and a minute later Ian Murray’s side netted but the referee ruled it out.

There was only time for Matthew Reilly to replace Chris Hamilton in the 93rd minute before the final whistle signalled three well-earned points for the visitors.
