SONS GRAB VITAL WIN OVER MONTROSE

Saturday 15th September 2018

DUMBARTON fought back determinedly after going behind to Montrose this afternoon, defeating the visitors 2-1 in a tough Ladbrokes League One tussle at the C&G Systems Stadium.

Sons were on top for a good proportion of the first half, but without a decisive break in the final third.

At the other end, Montrose were confined to a couple of chances until three minutes from the break, when Craig Johnston impressively squeezed a low, diving header past Grant Adam to snatch the lead.

In the meantime the injury gods continued to plague Dumbarton. First Stuart Carswell limped off to be replaced by Kyle Hutton, already battling a knock.

Then Jack Aitchison had to give way to Rory Loy not long afterwards, changing the the game plan again for Sons.

After the break Dumbarton pushed back. On 52 minutes Ross Forbes put in a probing shot from outside the area, but visiting keeper Allan Fleming saved comfortably.

Then on 68 minutes the tide turned. Forbes’ corner took a deflection and was met at the back post by Andy Dowie for the equaliser.

Two minutes later the referee pointed to the penalty spot after a foul on Rory Loy. Up stepped Forbes to drive the spot kick home for 2-1 to Dumbarton.

The drama continued when first Bolochoweckyj (violent conduct) and then Montrose manager Stewart Petrie (dissent) were red carded.

Sons managed the game well in the closing minutes to claim a crucial 2-1 victory.
