DUMBARTON put on a brave display away to Ladbrokes SPFL League One leaders Arbroath today, but ended up on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline, despite leading by a single goal at half time.
Following the departure of Stevie Aitken as manager, assistant Ian Durrant and coach Jamie Ewings were looking after team matters at Gayfield.
Encouragingly, Sons went in front on the quarter hour. Thomas’s shot from edge of area was parried to Iain Russell, who made no mistake and put the visitors into the lead.
The men from the Rock held on until the break, but the second half turned out to be a different story.
Things started to unravel on the hour, when Arbroath’s Wallace bent the ball into the net at the back post to equalise.
On 74 minutes Doris headed home to make it 2-1 to the Red Lichties.
Then not long afterwards Swankie’s shot took a nick off emergency Dumbarton keeper Mutch’s outstretched leg and rolled in for 3-1.
There was no coming back from that point, with injury-hit Sons suffering another disappointing result despite plenty of effort.
