SONS EDGE FIRST CLASH

Saturday 12th December 2020

DUMBARTON fought hard to take all three points against second-placed Cove Rangers at the C & G Systems Stadium this afternoon.

For the first ever meeting between the two sides, the Cove captain, ex-Son Mitch Megginson, and fellow prolific striker Rory McAllister were missing from manager Paul Hartley’s line-up.

In the tenth minute Broque Watson headed a cross high and wide. Five minutes later a fine Adam Frizzell run ended with a foul, but the free kick from Ross Forbes was saved by keeper Stuart McKenzie.

At the other end keeper Kevin Dabrowski made two great saves from Jamie Masson and a corner, then beat away Leighton McIntosh’s powerful close-range header.

In the 39th minute fine play by Rico Quitongo on the left enabled him to set up Jaime Wilson, but McKenzie made a brilliant save.

After only six minutes of the second period Sons took the lead when Nat Wedderburn (pictured after his goal) powered home a header from a Forbes free kick, his first goal for the club. Later he was named man of the match.

The visitors looked for an equaliser, and manager Jim Duffy responded with a double substitution, with PJ Crossan and Denny Johnstone coming in for Wilson and Dan Church. Soon after Stefan McCluskey, coming back from injury, came on for Frizzell.

Chances came at both ends, including a Cove free kick which hit the post, but Sons held on for a welcome victory.
