IT was last minute heartbreak for Dumbarton against Greenock Morton tonight, as the home side clinched a late winner to steal the game 3-2 at Cappielow on a grey evening.
Sons started with the same line-up as the weekend game against Dundee United. The first half of the match proved goalless, despite chances at both ends. Ton got the ball into the net on 13 minutes, but it was disallowed for offside.
The real action began after the break. On 55 minutes Grant Gallagher’s cross was brought down by Danny Handling (pictured) and rifled into the top corner of the Morton net to give Sons the lead.
But six minutes later the home side burst down their right flank and loanee Gary Fraser got on the end of a well-targeted cross to fire past Scott Gallagher for the equaliser.
On 68 minutes Morton turned the game right around as John Baird finished into the far corner to make it 2-1 to the hosts.
After the Greenock men failed to land a killer blow on 77 minutes, Dumbarton started to look threatening entering the last ten minutes of the game.
With three minutes left on the clock Liam Burt picked the ball up and tried a shot. His effort took a huge deflection from Thomas O’Ware and went into the net to make it 2-2.
But just when it looked as if Sons had grabbed a vital point, their near neighbours stole the match, with Jack Iredale being the player who converted for a 3-2 win after Gallacher’s initial save.
Next up for Sons is a Championship double-header against Inverness Caledonian Thistle, starting with a visit to the Highlands on the afternoon of Saturday 14th April, and then Caley visiting the YOUR Radio 103FM Stadium for the evening of Tuesday 17th April.
