DUMBARTON sank to the foot of the SPFL Championship this afternoon, losing 4-0 to Queen of the South in a frustrating match at the Bet Butler Stadium.

Sons’ passing game never looked decisive enough to get past a solid Doonhamers backline, and a first half defensive error then allowed Derek Lyle in to open the scoring for the visitors on 20 minutes.

After the break things went from bad to worse for the home side. A header by Gavin Reilly (50 mins) made Dumbarton’s task even harder, before James Fowler added a third with a finely executed speculative shot from outside the box (68 mins).

Ex-Son Iain Russell completed Sons’ misery with a left-footed drive for 4-0 on 77 minutes, leaving Dumbarton gaffer Ian Murray with a major task to lift his players ahead of the much-anticipated trip to Ibrox next weekend.
