DUMBARTON lost out 6-5 on penalties after a 3-3 draw in their final Betfred Cup Group A game against table-toppers Peterhead at the Cheaper Insurance Direct Stadium this afternoon.
The result means Sons finish bottom of the group after a disappointing campaign — and all attention now turns towards the SPFL Championship season 2016/17, which starts away to Dunfermline next Saturday.
The men from the Rock went in 2-1 ahead at half-time in a dramatic game, which saw the Blue Toon taking an early lead from Kevin Dzierzawski.
Sons hit back with a brace, first from Robert Thomson and then from David Smith, opening his account for Dumbarton.
Leighton Macintosh and a Rory McAllister spot kick pulled goals back to level it for Peterhead following the break, after Sons had pulled 3-1 ahead thanks to a Ryan Stevenson penalty.
With the score 3-3 at full time was down to penalties to decide how the three points would be divided.
Peterhead twice missed the chance to sew things up from the spot, before Nicky Riley scored the decisive goal for the Blue Toon.
Peterhead now go through to the next stage as Group A winners, leap-frogging East Fife, while Sons go out of the competition.
