SONS BEATEN AT AIRDRIE

Dumbarton put on a promising performance but were ultimately defeated 2-0 by Airdrieonians in their Viaplay Cup opener this afternoon.

Sons matched their Championship opponents for much of the 90-minutes but two goals in the closing stages earned three points for the hosts.

Stevie Farrell’s side made life difficult for Airdrie throughout and created the best opportunity of the first-half but Ross MacLean was off target from close range.

At the other end, Brett Long had to be sharp on a few occasions but denied Adam Frizzell, Gabby McGill and Aaron Taylor-Sinclair.

After the interval, there were further good openings for Dumbarton but they couldn’t find a way past Josh Rae and were made to pay when Nikolay Todorov was quickest to react to a loose ball on 86 minutes before Lewis McGreg sealed the result a few minutes later.

Elsewhere in Group E, Inverness were 2-1 winners over Bonnyrigg Rose with Sons set to host Caley on Tuesday.
