DUMBARTON progressed to the fifth round of the William Hill Scottish Cup this afternoon, beating Berwick Rangers 3-1 on a cold afternoon at Shielfield.
It was not all easy sailing, however. The home side marked and tackled hard, going ahead on 7 minutes when Jamie Ewings could not get near Lee Currie’s firmly struck left-footed free kick from just outside the area.
Sons came back to make it 1-1 just short of the half hour when Bryan Prunty converted a penalty after Berwick’s Stephen Tulloch handled the ball.
Then on 42 minutes Mitch Megginson made it 2-1 to Dumbarton with a superb strike into the bottom right-hand corner of the net, assisted by Mark Gilhaney.
The second half turned into a free-flowing attacking game, though there were relatively few chances for either side. Scott Linton wrapped up the match for Sons on 55 minutes with another excellent shot.
Dumbarton could have had more goals. One effort from Colin Nish was disallowed for hand-ball, while a wonder strike from Jordan Kirkpatrick produced an equally impressive save from Billy Bald right at the end.
The draw for the fifth round of the Scottish Cup is on Monday.
