SOMEBODY could make history at Dumbarton this season – and not even know they’re doing it.
Because it is likely that the 1000th goal to be scored at the club’s current stadium will hit the net sometime during the 2017/18 campaign.
Currently the tally stands at 976, counting matches played in the league and the three domestic cup competitions (excluding penalty shoot-outs).
Sons have scored 505 of those goals, with their 500th being scored by Robert Thomson to open the scoring in March’s 4-0 win over Raith Rovers (pictured).
Raith themselves have actually been the most prolific away team, scoring 27 times at the Rock in 14 visits. Tomorrow’s opponents Morton are next with 25 in 19 visits.
Club historian Jim McAllister said: “The 1000th goal at the current stadium will of course be a major landmark in Dumbarton’s already illustrious history.
“Hopefully it will be a Sons player who gets it!
“Games at the current stadium have averaged just under three goals per game, so it is possible that around the festive season, we could witness the millennial goal there.”
