SINCE the age of 16, when he joined Blackburn Rovers as a youth player, most of Craig Barr’s waking hours have been devoted to football.

Saturday has been matchday, and training has taken place day in, day out.

Now that he is part-time with Dumbarton, weekends are still about kicking a ball around a pitch.

But he now gets to spend only four hours a week preparing with his team-mates and coaches.

That, though, isn’t something that puts the defender off facing the new season with Sons.

In fact, he couldn’t be happier to making a new start in what has already been a productive career.

He told “The older you get, you know it’s coming sooner and sooner.

“You don’t know what’s round the corner and when you’ll have to consider part-time football instead of full-time.

“But I view it as a positive and exciting time for me and a whole new start in front of me.

“It’s a new team, and it’s like a whole new house to move into, or a new job.

“It’s all go and I’m using it as a positive exercise for myself.”

Although he has only just started wearing Dumbarton colours, Sons are far from an unknown quantity to Craig.

He was in close proximity to Bryan Prunty when the striker scored THAT goal at Livingston, and has been in opposition with Raith Rovers the last three seasons.

He is therefore well qualified to tell other teams of the challenge that they face in Dumbarton – but he’s keeping that knowledge to himself, and hopes to help the club continue to achieve in the Championship.

He added: “I’m hoping we’ll do well and build on last season.

“Last season, with Raith Rovers, my team-mates and I were always hoping they would slip up – but they didn’t.

“Dumbarton have been in the Championship for a good few seasons now and it’s a massive achievement for a part-time club.

“Ultimately the goal is to stay in the Championship year on year, with how competitive the league is.

“But you always set other goals and once the squad is together, I’m sure we will sit down and work out where we want to be as a unit.”
