SIXTY-THREE YEAR RECORD ENDS WITH EMPHATIC WIN

Saturday 13th August 2022

DUMBARTON have started a league season with three wins for the first time since 1959 after a clinical display saw them win 4-0 at home to Annan Athletic today.

In baking heat, Sons knew they were in for a test against a fancied side in cinch League Two this season.

And just as in the previous home fixture against Stirling Albion, Sons were off to a fantastic start. With three minutes gone, a cross from the right found Declan Byrne (pictured) at the back post to head home.

He then became one of four players, two from each team, to be booked in the opening quarter of the game as things got heated.

Then Annan thought they had equalised through Tommy Goss from close range, but the officials ruled that Brett Long had saved before the ball could cross the line.

He also made a fine save from Tony Wallace as half time approached.

Sons were under pressure, but added a sensational second goal five minutes from the interval. Finlay Gray was played in 15 yards out and bent home a fine shot.

And seven minutes into the second half, it was 3-0, Joe McKee crossing for Byrne to score with another header.

Annan continued to compete, but Long denied Wallace again, pushing his header wide.

Sons saw it out, and with two minutes remaining a familiar-looking trialist squared a corner across goal for Gregor Buchanan to tap home.

Dumbarton return to action next Saturday away to Stenhousemuir.
