SAINTS HIT SONS FOR SIX

Saturday 28th July 2018

IT was a grim ending to their Betfred Cup run for Dumbarton in Paisley this afternoon, as newly-promoted Premiership side St Mirren whipped the men from the Rock 6-0 in the final Group H match.

Sons had hardly had a touch of the ball after the kick-off when Coulson burst into the box from down the left-hand side for Buddies and fired past keeper Adam.

On 35 minutes a cross from the right from Smith was nodded across Dumbarton’s goalie and into the far corner of the net for 2-0, which is how the score remained through to the break.

Things did not improve in the second half. On 48 minutes a deflected cross from found it’s way on to Stewart’s head and he diverted the ball past an outstretched Adam for St Mirren’s third.

Five minutes later it was four. A terrific strike from McGinn put the ball into the top corner from 20 yards.

Seven minutes from the end of the match Kellerman picked up the scraps from a free-kick and the ball bobbled in to the Sons’ net from close range as the visitors went nap.

Moments later Smith struck an audacious effort from range that flew over Adam to make it 6-0, crashing Sons out of the cup.
