Vastly experienced winger Chris returned for a second spell at Dumbarton in the summer of 2025 after a season out of the game.

He burst onto the scene as a teenager at Kilmarnock, earning the nickname the Mini Messi for pundits for his diminutive stature and skilful performances out wide.

Johnston featured almost 70 times during five seasons in the top flight at Rugby Park, before leaving for Raith Rovers in the summer of 2016 – following the appointment of former Killie boss Gary Locke.

A short spell with Sons followed in 2017, before he moved on loan to Peterhead in January 2018.

Annan Athletic was his next port of call, with Johnston named in the PFA League Two Team of the Year in 2018-19, and nominated for League Two Player of the Season.

A season at Clyde in League One, was followed by a return to the Galabankies – where he made his name as one of the best creators in the fourth tier.

Johnston played a key role in helping Annan to secure promotion from League Two for the first time in their history in 2023, before moving to Stranraer for a short spell in the winter of 2024.

Having been a long-time admirer, boss Stevie Farrell moved quickly to bring Chris back to The Marbill Coaches Stadium in June 2025.

Chris left Dumbarton in January 2026 after making 8 appearances in William Hill League 2 and 10 across the cups.
