A LATE goal for Greenock Morton prevented Dumbarton from claiming at least a point from their neighbours at the Cheaper Insurance Direct Stadium this afternoon.
Sons started out on the front foot, and enjoyed more of the play across an otherwise even first half that nevertheless left them trailing.
Willie Gibson, Eamonn Brophy and Steven Saunders created a number of half chances through decent balls into the visitors’ box.
Morton pressed back. On 25 minutes Joe McKee broke through the home defence, but thankfully his finish was wide.
However, on 41 minutes Mark Brown’s clearance from a follow-on to a Morton corner fell kindly to McKee 18 yards out. He drove the ball home low and hard to give his side a 1-0 lead at half time.
Sons struck back swiftly after the break. Skipper Gibson’s free kick was not dealt with by the Ton defence, and Darren Barr stepped up to fire home the equaliser.
The rest of the half was end to end, until a disastrous mix up at the back on 85 minutes allowed Morton’s Denny Johnstone to turn the ball into an empty net for the winner.
Next up for Dumbarton is a long trip to Dumfries in a week’s time to face Queen of the South.
