MATCH PREVIEW: DUMBARTON VS STIRLING ALBION

The cinch League One play-offs get under way this evening as Dumbarton host Stirling Albion in a semi-final first-leg clash at the Rock [kick-off 7.45pm].

Score lines across the SPFL on Saturday resulted in Sons dropping to fourth in League Two as they lost 2-1 at Peterhead and Spartans were 2-1 winners at East Fife.

In League One, Stirling Albion could only draw with Annan Athletic as they finished ninth in the table and are playing for their League One survival.

That confirmed that Dumbarton will meet Stirling Albion over two legs whilst Peterhead face Spartans in the other semi-final. The winners of the two ties will face in a two-leg final next Tuesday and Friday.

Dumbarton’s defeat on Saturday was their first in seven games as manager Stevie Farrell has been using his squad in recent weeks with the spot in the top-four of the division long confirmed.

The Sons boss admits his sides final league position wasn’t vital to him as attentions now turn to the play-offs.

He commented post-match: “We weren’t good enough in the first-half on Saturday but in the second-half we were excellent so it was a game of two halves and we’re unlucky not to come away with something.

“It’s immaterial who we ended up being put up against and it wasn’t a factor for me. I didn’t have in my head who I would rather play. We’ve focussed on us this season and making sure we’re going into the play-offs in the right mind.

“We’ve got to turn up on Tuesday night and over both legs to get after Stirling Albion.

“A couple of years ago we were the team that finished second bottom and not been used to winning games so it’s a different pressure but we’re looking forward to the game.”

Farrell reports that there are no injury concerns coming out of Saturday with only Brett Long and Greig Young missing – and also revealed that the duo have returned to the training pitch.
