HOSTS Kilmarnock comfortably controlled this Betfred Cup group E final match against Dumbarton at Rugby Park this afternoon, running out 2-0 winners.
The Premiership side dominated the first half, ex-Son Eamonn Brophy netting with an angled shot in the second minute, and Mitchell Pinnock lifting the ball over keeper Kevin Dabrowski in the 45th minute.
Midway through the half Sons had to reshape their defence when Ryan McGeever went off injured. Denny Johnstone came on up front, but the visitors made little progress in attack.
After the break in heavy rain the one-way traffic continued, with a Brophy shot deflected for a corner. But gradually Jim Duffy’s men worked their way into the game.
In the 62nd minute Sons at last had a chance, but Ruaridh Langan (pictured) shot over, then a shot from the hallway line by Ross Forbes was saved. At the other end Dabrowski made a brilliant save from a Brophy header.
In the 86th minute Johnstone headed wide from a Forbes cross, but the home side held on to their lead.
