Josh Todd has become Dumbarton’s first signing of the January window, joining from Annan Athletic.
The vastly experienced 31-year-old returns for a second spell at The Marbill Coaches Stadium, almost a decade after his first, and has inked an 18 month deal after being an ever-present for the Galabankies this season.
Josh started his career with local club Carlisle United before moving to Galabank, initially on loan, before making the move permanently. Three impressive seasons followed, with Stevie Aitken bringing Josh to G82 in 2016.
His performances across 27 games as a Dumbarton player quickly led to a move to St Mirren, with Josh going on to represent Queen of the South across three spells, and also serving as the Doonhamers’ captain, as well as turning out for Dundee, Falkirk and Ayr United.
He returned to Annan for a second spell in the summer of 2024, making 44 appearances last season – and a further 30 already this year. A change in work circumstances saw Josh leave Galabank over the weekend, with Sons boss Frank McKeown moving quickly to bring him back to The Rock.
The gaffer said: “I’m delighted Josh has agreed to come on board with us. It’s a real coup for the club and clearly sets out our intentions in this window. January can be a very difficult transfer window to bring in players you want, however I have identified Josh over a number of seasons and he knows how much I wanted him here, so to finally get him back is brilliant for everyone. Josh has been a standout performer for both Annan and Queen of the South in recent years and we’re delighted to have him back in a Dumbarton jersey.
“He’s a player who has huge experience, he’s a leader and someone who never hides on the pitch. He will be a huge asset to us moving forward and I am hoping he is one of a number of new faces that come to the club as I look to start building my own team.”
Josh will go straight into our squad for our next game, against Elgin City on Saturday January 24, and will wear the number 8 shirt.
