CLUB history has been made as Dumbarton beat Elgin City 2-1 at home today – our first time ever starting a league season with five straight wins.
Elgin took the lead in controversial fashion on 26 minutes. The ball looked to have crossed the touchline for a throw-in to Dumbarton, but play was allowed to continue and Kane Hester finished from 12 yards.
A Joe McKee effort hit the crossbar as Sons looked to respond, but his afternoon ended soon after as he went off injured.
A frustrating first half ended 1-0 to the visitors, but Sons levelled six minutes into the second half.
After Gregor Buchanan was fouled in the area going for a corner, the referee awarded a penalty which Ally Love stepped up to convert.
Incredibly, three minutes later it was another penalty to Dumbarton after a foul on Aron Lynas in the box. Love stepped up again, and scored again, to make it 2-1.
Clear chances for either side were few and far between for the rest of a stuffy afternoon, but Sons held on for a moment of history.
They continue the league campaign next Saturday away to East Fife.
