GAFFER WELCOMES CUP CHALLENGE

Saturday 13th July 2013

SONS boss Ian Murray has welcomed the home draw against Albion Rovers in the first round of the Scottish League Cup, and remains committed to continuous improvement ahead of the new season.

Dumbarton showed room for improvement in the first half of their latest friendly at the Rock, against newly promoted SPLers Partick Thistle. But, positively, they pulled two goals back after the break.

“We’re pleased with the squad we’ve got,” said Murray. “There’s competition for places all over the park. We’re looking to improve and we’re not going to be too disappointed after the first 45 minutes against Partick.”

Responding to news of the League Cup tie at the Bet Butler Stadium against Third Division opponents Albion Rovers of Saturday 3rd August, the gaffer declared: “It’s a great chance for us to progress in both Cups before the league season starts.”

He added: It’s a home tie against a team from a lower league division, so you’ve got to be happy… [But] we know what can happen and we’ll prepare as professionally as we normally do, because we don’t want to be out of two Cups early on, which is what happened last season.”

Sons also have the 2012/13 Stirlingshire Cup Final against First Division rivals Falkirk to play on Tuesday 23rd August, again at the Rock.

Then, four days later, there’s a testing away trip to Second Division side Stranraer in the Ramsdens Cup, on Saturday 27th July.
