Match Report

Our women’s team concluded their ScottishPower League Cup campaign today with a home defeat to Gleniffer Thistle at Mountblow.

Due to a mixture of injury, sickness and holiday we had to settle for a squad of only 11 today for the match, with no substitutes available and several players operating out of position.

We had the first chance of the match, a deep Gemma Smith free kick was met by Alisha Biggerstaff at the back post, but the auxiliary winger could only head wide from just outside the six-yard area.

It would however, be the visitors who opened the scoring, a pass into the centre forward was well held up before she turned the defender and slotted home.

They would add a second after being awarded a soft free kick out right on the byline. A swooping cross in evaded everybody before being tucked home at the back post.

The ladies did respond well, Neamh MacNeil, operating as a striker today managed to utilize her pace and break through the Thistle defence right on the half time whistle and slotted home with her right boot across the keeper to get us back in the tie.

Unfortunately, goalkeeper Kira Swallow was forced off at the interval, she took a knee to the head early in the first 45 and could not continue after the break. Due to the small squad the side went down to ten, with the ever-reliable Lucia Sereno putting on the gloves to help her team.

Unfortunately for the team the visitors made the extra player, and the energy of substitutes count, adding four second half goals to secure a 6-1 victory in the match.

Sereno performed well between the sticks despite losing a quartet of goals. Making two excellent stops from close range when Thistle got through one-on-one and holding a free kick well.

Despite the poor result the team worked hard against their disadvantages and had several chances to grab some more goals. It was not to be, but the side do progress to the latter stages of the tournament and will play a last 24 tie on October 26^th.

The focus now goes onto league action, with the first match of the new SWFL Central-West division taking place on October 12^th, with the side hosting Cumbernauld United at Mountblow with a kick off time to be communicated in due course.
